On Oregon and Feeding the Wildlife

This time last year, things were different. Jus was in Oregon, serving a mission for our church. Part of last Mother's Day was spent listening on the phone (in tears) as that boy talked with his whole family. Being on an LDS mission, Jus could only call home on Mother's Day and Christmas. I will always appreciate his mom for sharing him with me on those days. That Mother's Day, however, was a particularly incredible phone call. For a lot of reasons.

In that last phone call, we talked about taking a tour of Oregon together. Last week we did, and it was marvelous. We spent a week driving around between Oregon and Washington, listening to Taylor Swift and Royal Wedding podcasts, and watching Indiana Jones. We wandered along the beach, scrambled on top of rocks, and listened to the seals chatting with each other. The Oregon coast is absolutely beautiful. I love it. Jus was the perfect little tour guide, taking me to places he explored, and introducing me to friends he had made. I think that was one of my favorite things we did together.

We spent a few days with family in Seattle, and munched on Ivars on the pier. Delicious. As a matter of course, we saved some food for the seagulls. (They watch you with those beady eyes all the way through your meal.) Gull feeding can be an intimidating process. You're never quite sure if they will see your outstretched finger as an extension of the fry in your hand. As Jus was contemplating how to accomplish the task at hand, and come back with all of his fingers, a huge white, whiney blur flew past his left shoulder, and snagged the clam strip in question. Bang! Out of nowhere. Last I checked, all ten digits are in their place.

Well, reality can't be suspended anymore for the moment. We're back. Laundry needs to be done, and bills need to be paid. But, Jus and I will make plans to go back again. The beaches and the seagulls will be waiting.
